| Name: | Shay |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | May 14 |
Bio:
Shay is what’s called a Special, she’s had mandatory surgical remodeling of her body, she’s stronger, faster, and more resilient than a normal human. Included in this is an augmentation of the senses, basically bringing them up to preternatural levels. She was also engineered to be Pretty (with a capital P) which means that her face is symmetrical and loaded with all sorts of biological triggers to cause people to go “oh, she’s pretty” even if they don’t realize it consciously. This runs mostly towards the symmetry, full lips, wide eyes and smooth skin (it’s debatable, however, if this is a biological fact, or something that’s been socially programmed into her society).
Shay also has a number of bio-electric wet-ware installed (for lack of a better word) in her body that all run off of the bio-electricity she generates. This includes:
Nanos, which are microscopic replication devices to heal injuries. This is not instantaneous, but much more quickly than normal, burn blisters fading in a matter of hours instead of days, for instance.
A skeleton made of high-impact airline ceramic (that’s what the book says, I'm not totally sure what it is, but I figure it’s like the tiles they coat the space shuttle with) that is near impossible to break.
She's got a 'flash tattoo' of three snakes twisting in knots along her right eyebrow and down her temple, it's keyed to her pulse, and moves faster as her heart rate goes up. Mostly the snakes just wriggle a little with each heartbeat
A Skintenna, which is a communications device hardwired to the rest of her group, that keeps them in constant contact thanks to a micro-speaker in the ear and a micro-mic in the jaw to pick up on speech too low for normal people to hear, these can, of course, be switched off. Think of it like an internal cell phone, it probably runs off the same waves & frequencies.
Shay also has a hoverboard, the hovering works magnetically, pushing off of any metal, and it’s run on solar-rechargeable batteries, an almost sail folding out of the sides of it to collect the sun and folding right back up again for use.
Shay is very aggressive-minded and has a competitive streak a mile long. She is fiercely loyal to those she considers friends, and protective, as well as possessive, of them. Some of this is just the way she is, but it was amplified when she was made Special. She’s somewhat childlike in her moods, one minute will be sunshine and puppies and the next minute takes a turn for the worse and everyone’s her worst enemy. She’s quick to react and slow to forgive, especially if she feels she’s been wronged.
Brief History:
Shay was the youngest of her group of friends, and therefore the last to turn Pretty, and felt thoroughly abandoned by them when they seemed to forget about her after their operations. Then one night she met Tally who was in the same situation. The two became fast friends, finding that they had the same birthday and neither of them would be left behind by friends again, not even for a day.
Shay taught Tally how to hoverboard, being something of an amateur expert herself, and knowing how to ‘trick’ the boards to take them out of bounds and out from under the constant watching of the city itself.
Where Tally was eager for the operation, Shay often spoke against it, asking why would everyone want to look the same, questioning things that Tally had never thought to question and later revealing that not all of her group of friends had become Pretty, some had run away to join a group of renegades living outside the city, a fabled place called The Smoke, mostly because of the smoke that permeated it because of the wood-burning, but also because whenever the government tried to pin it down, it vanished like smoke.
Shay urged Tally to come with her, only to have her new friend abandon her again. Shay went on to the Smoke alone, only to have Tally show up a few days later, having an apparent change of heart.
Sadly this was not the case, Tally had come as a spy for the city’s watchdog organization Special Circumstances under the threat of never becoming Pretty. Most of the Smoke got away again, but not Shay. She was forced to undergo the operation anyway, and thanks to an unpublicized portion of the operation (lesions being made in the brain to cut down on aggression and hostility and general bad feelings) she forgave Tally and they became friends once more.
At least until the Smokies made another appearance, leaving something for Tally, which she found with the help of one of her new friends. What this turned out to be was a cure for the lesions, a specific sort of nano that healed the damaged tissues, furious that Tally shared this with someone else and not her, Shay was determined to find her own way out of the fuzzy, bubble-headed way of thinking that most Pretties were subject to. She turned to cutting, finding that the pain, and the adrenaline it caused, was enough to snap everything into focus for a while, the same as hoverboarding did if it was a hard run, forcing her to use critical thinking.
While Tally went searching for the Smoke once more, Shay slowly began to gather others into her clique, and they soon caught they eye of Special Circumstances, being made into an elite unit of Specials to hunt down The Smoke once more. They called themselves the Cutters, because that’s what they did to keep themselves sharp, and when they were rebuilt as Specials, it was programmed into them to respond to pain-endorphins and adrenaline with more clear thinking, sharper senses. Aggression was also high on the list of things that was given back to them, making them ruthless hunters, especially Shay who was hell-bent on making Tally regret everything she’d done.
Shay is from the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld, I make no claim to her, or profit from playing her, I also am not Megan Fox who provides the face, I don't claim to be her either, this is just for fun
